ISBN: 1855759896

"The EFPP monograph series has established itself as an important source of high- quality psychoanalytic psychotherapy papers. This volume adds to its growing reputation with a group of papers that deals with the analytic relationship from several perspectives, in particular the influence of the analyst/therapist on the evolution of the therapeutic process. This is, of course, a fundamental issue and one that is hotly debated within the analytic community." -- Paul Williams from the Foreword
Dimitris Anastasopoulos and Evangelos Papanicolaou have gathered together a distinguished group of contributors to focus on the therapist’s participation in therapy and the influence of personal factors on the therapeutic relationship. The majority of the papers grew out of the proceedings of the fourth EFPP Congress of the Adults Section in 2000 and explore the therapist-patient relationship with the emphasis on the influence of the therapist as opposed to that of the patient. Topics discussed in this collection include the impact of the patient on the analyst, how the analyst’s clinical theory and personal philosophy affect the analytic process, the effect of the therapist’s dreams on the therapeutic process, the psychoanalyst’s influence on the collaborative process, and intersubjective phenomena and emotional exchange in the psychoanalytic process. Certain papers focus mainly on theory while others are more clinically-oriented.
This volume presents an overview of historic and current thinking and aims to generate yet more discussion on this evolving and important issue. It will be of interest to practicing and training psychotherapists.
Contributors include Dimitris Anastasopoulos, Christos Ioannidis, Judy Kantrowitz, Joachim Kuchenhoff, Gila Ofer, Evangelos Papanicolaou, Maria Ponsi, Claude Smadja, Imre Szecsody, Gisela Zeller.

Families in Transformation is a collection of essays by eminent scholars on the psychoanalysis of couples and families and provides a wide ranging and articulated picture of the current situation in Europe.
The reader will find various psychoanalytical models applied in it: from object relations theory to group analysis to the theory of links, encountering the lively and rich French, Italian, and British schools at work in different settings.
Themes range from myths to secrets, to incest and the brotherly dimension of families; from adoptive families to the conflicts over separation, in addition to papers discussing perverse and violent couples. The book shows how it is possible to put together an understanding of the individual’s internal world with the interpersonal dynamics of families, their bonds and relations, expressed in somatic and active terms at the inter- and trans-generational level.
‘This brilliant book has long been awaited in the psychoanalytic community. It details in an exhaustive way the state of the art in the field of psychoanalytic family therapy, and describes the current approaches to theory and clinical work in couples and families, as well as the different shades of meaning developed by the most prominent contemporary authors writing on this subject. This work is not only for family therapists, but also addresses the entire psychoanalytic community. Gone are the times when it was commonplace to say that family therapy was opposed to individual therapy. Now such opposition has been overcome in favour of synergy, and this book convincingly shows how this shift has taken place. The authors have drawn in a creative way from different areas of knowledge, reaping a wealth of theories, perspectives, and clinical evidence that will enrich all therapists.’
— Antonino Ferro, President of the Italian Psychoanalytical Society (SPI) and member of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
